Each microphone has an area of detection, the shape of this area relates to the directionality of the microphone. An omnidirectional microphone has a, more or less, spherical area of detection, whilst a directional microphone has a lobed area of detection in front of the microphone. For more information on which microphone is best for you see our FAQs ‘What is the difference between a directional and omnidirectional microphone?’ or our tool to help you decide which recorder and microphone is right for you.
